+...MaTaRiKi...+

This brilliant wearable art designed by Claire Prebble

Matariki is a constellation of seven stars that signifies the Maori New Year. It can be seen towards the end of May in the early morning sky. It is a time of plenty as it falls at the end of harvest when the crops have been stored and the fish and bitds are abundant. When the stars of Matariki are clear and bright, it was thought that the year ahead would be warm and the harvest plentiful. When the stars appeared blurred and hazy, a cold and lean year was expected.

The bodice of the dress is made from shredded and dyed flax and, like the mask, signifies the night, fading into the green which represents new beginnings, growth and the environment. Conservation and respect for the environment are strong themes for Matariki. It is a time to remember the land, which provides food and many of the other things we need, and to remind ourselves that we need to respect nature if we want it to continue to provide for us.

Matariki is made from a soft variety of flax, called "Whariki", which is traditionally used for mats. The flax was sourced from Tapu Te Ranag Marae in Island Bay in Wellington, New Zealand (Aotearoa). Matariki was created to represent Tourism NZ as a sponsor for the World of Wearable Art show for 2008 to 2009.
