Laura Fauvel talked about her last collection which exhibited at Graduate Fashion Week 2008 was called “The Circular Motion of Life”.
It was inspired by a sentence that I had read about how the first three years of a child’s life determines their character and personality in later life. During this research I realised that much of my research related to me so I wanted to look into the culture and natural beauty of my place of birth ‘Papua New Guinea’ which I have now come to realise portrays a part of me.
My final collection consisted of eight outfits. I created a contemporary style capturing the organic forms, textures and natural colours of the exotic island, where I was born, while contradicting the fighting edginess of the tribal culture and spirit.
My collection incorporates engineered printed jersey cat suits embellished with hand drawn digitally printed designs inspired by tribal tattoos, a hand pleated crystallised dress, and a delicately pleated organza jacket with leather fastenings among others.
About Laura Fauvel
Laura is a fashion designer today, because…
That’s why she was born. Everyone has a destiny built into them and it is their own choice weather to use it or not.
If Laura would not have become a designer, she would be…
She would be snowboarding on the highest peaks or surfing the biggest waves, enjoying the world. Although the type of challenge may not fulfil her.
Laura spent her life school years…
Moving from Papua New Guinea to France then to Newcastle and Eastbourne in the UK, finally ending up at Ravensbourne College in London. Moving location so much has meant adapting to different cultures and languages and people which has helped her to communicate and laugh and joke whilst working hard.
Laura’s friends think…
She is crazy with many facets to the rough outer crystal. When its work, its work hard, until the birds have woken chirped and gone back to sleep?????? And when its fun it’s extreme. It’s not where you are in the world it is who you are with.
When Laura was a teenager, she dreamed of being…
She dreamed of working for Alexander McQueen (done that) and completing a collection based on Papua New Guinea (done that), working in Paris for Jean Paul Gaultier (next plan) and beginning my own fashion house (next…next plan).
She knew she would become a fashion designer when…
She began to realize that fashion involved conceptual thinking which she could relate to. She could interpret herself in an abstract metaphorical way.
She would never…
Say never, on the other hand after watching Jack Ars 2, she may think about that a BILLION seconds longer.
Laura gets inspired by...
Most of all by colour. A lot of people are attracted by colour but most people only see the obvious differences. After hours and days and weeks of dyeing shades and million shades of colour for Alexander McQueen, Laura can detect the slightest change in the tint of shade and the different colours which arise from different textiles.
The defining moment in her career was…
The most defining moment in her career so far, was standing up on the long stage at the Gala Show of Graduate Fashion week receiving her award. Especially as her parents and sister were in the audience, oh and she found that it was quite fun walking past Zhandra Rhodes (who winked at me) and Claudia Schiffer, to collecting my colour and textiles award.
For a day, Laura would like to be…
A bird, so she could fly over the world and put things into perspective.
In 10 years from now, Laura would like to see herself…
Laura would like to see herself working for Jean Paul Gaultier and begin realizing her biggest dream to own her own Fashion House.
If Laura ruled the world, she would…
She would make all the overly rich and selfish people give a percentage of their gold to the poor like Robin Hood.
She would describe Laura’s personality as…
Mountains and valleys with extreme highs or lows. Extreme fun and just getting the boring stuff done; quite shy sometimes; very passionate and toooo kind which is a problem.
Laura wishes…
The other 4 Fauvel kids to collaborate together to make a sophisticated world renowned brand name.
If she could life her life again…
She wouldn’t pick any other different long winding paths. She believes she is a very lucky lady which at the moment has everything she wants. Every path you choose has bumps and cobwebs along it but it’s the choices you make which determined your own future.
